A Beer over Tranquil Waters

Another road trip, and this time we were out to NH to visit my father-in-law Ed.  It’s the holiday weekend (a four day weekend for me), and our family looks forward to getting back to see the beach and seeing family.  I look forward to the opportunity to hit a few of my favorite beer spots, including my favorite brewpub, the Portsmouth brewery (http://portsmouthbrewery.com).

I’ve been going to the brewery since 1992, eating nachos there regularly and sampling a ton of beer.  I love getting down to the city and walking along the water, but going to the Portsmouth Brewery is my favorite.  The best part for me is that both Jenn and Ed love it too. I got the nachos (surprise), and treated myself to a sampler since they had a large set of new beer.  It had a couple of session beers, the Petite Effronte, a Belgian IPA at 4.25% ABV and their Zwickel, a unpasteurized lager that is similar to a Keller Bier at 4.5%.  That’s okay, the flight was balanced with the Raisin Trippel, the Wheat Wine and the oak aged Wheat Wine on cask, all over 9% ABV.  I got extra jalapenos so that I could put a slice on each chip, and I was in heaven.

It was a good weekend, and Jenn agreed to take an alternate route home so that I could share with her a neat little place in Vermont, the Long Trail Brewery (www.longtrail.com).  Long Trail is off of Route 4, and it is pretty much exactly half way between our place and Ed’s.  The pub is right besides the mountain river, and on this hot Memorial Day the cool air was truly refreshing.  I got the VT version of the Philly Cheesesteak, served with Cabot cheddar instead of Cheez Whiz (I’d have to say that the substitution was acceptable).  I got some of the specialty beers, including the Black Walnut Dunkleweiss and the Maple Maibock, both on draft.  Jenn enjoyed the Blackberry Wheat (surprise, surprise) and affirmed that she liked fruit in her beer, even if it wasn’t blueberry.  My favorite was their Milk Stout, a great dessert beer that would have been perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  We went down by the river, and kipped stones.  It was a great rest stop and it adds only about a ½ hour to the trip.  We’ll have to come back this way again.

We made it home safe and sound.  It was a quick weekend, but a needed break.  I was fortunate to be able to spend time with my family. - 6324/14069
