New job, new opportunities. I accepted a new job as a manager in Field Engineering, and after a week on the job I had the opportunity to head out to my old stomping ground to take part in the review of the local office. I was looking forward to seeing my old friends, visit with my in-laws (really, I was!), and go to some of my favorite beer bars.
On the way out there was a lot of traffic on the Mass Pike, so I went north on I-91 and stopped first by the Moan and Dove (http://www.themoananddove.com/menu.html). The Beer Advocate rated this place the best place to get a beer in the country, and the bar is a left wing hangout similar to the local populace (Amherst, MA). I got to try the Southampton Imperial Porter on draft, although I was disappointed that they didn’t have anything available on cask. The next place made up for it. I stopped by the People’s Pint (http://thepeoplespint.com/) in Greensboro for dinner and got their Ploughman’s platter. They also had three beers on cask; I was able to sample half-pints of them all. My favorite was the Brakeshoe Porter.
The next night I took the review team out to my favorite brewpub, the Portsmouth Brewery (http://www.portsmouthbrewery.com/index.html). The food and the conversation was good, but of course the beer was even better. I got my old standby, the Brewery nachos, and got to try the Hop Harvest both on draft and cask. I wrapped up my trip with a side step up to Kennebunkport to go to Federal Jacks. This is the brewery for Shipyard Brewing, and it is in a pretty little town on the coast. I tried the Prelude Ale, again on cask, and had a really nice fish chowda.
At the end of the week I was in a hurry to get home to the kids, but not in such a hurry that I wouldn’t stop at my new favorite rest stop between NH and NY, the Maple Leaf Brewpub in Wilmington, VT. The black bean quesadillas were excellent, and they went well with their Oktoberfest. The service is a little slow, but the food is worth the wait.
My new responsibilities will require me to be on the road much more than in the past. It’s part of the job and Jenn is great at watching our kids, but it is tough being away from home. Fortunately I make it my business to search out new beer finds no matter where I go. - 4346
