In the past I have had the opportunity to travel to Pittsburgh on business, and I’ve gotten quite familiar with the beer bars in the area. There is one place that is my favorite, and that is Fatheads on South Side. The food is great, they have a bottle store upstairs, and about 50 beers on draft. My counterpart, Tom, from our sister company met me for dinner and we got to try the beers.
We split an order of jalepeno cheddar wings, and I got the traditional Headwich, huge sandwiches that leave plenty of food left over for lunch the next day. I got to try the Victory Storm King Imperial Stout on cask (remember, ask for cask), and it was dark, chocolaty, and full-bodied. I next got to try a Belgian ale on draft from Van Steenbergen that was specially made for Fatheads, and it was called Head Trip. A cool idea, but it was only an average Belgian.
Since PA has different beer retailers than NY, I was able to find some different bottles upstairs for bringing home to Albany. The most notable ones were Penn Brewing Weizen Bock, and a Flying Dog Collaborator. Both were big bottles that I look forward to sharing with my friends.
It was a short excursion, but I made the most of it. - 4647
