What are We Thankful for?

I can’t believe the whole year has gone by and I hadn’t been to the Portsmouth Brewery. But with Black Friday here, I was able to get some necessary shopping completed AND stop at my favorite brewpub in the world. The Portsmouth Brewery was my home away from home when I worked at the shipyard, eating there 3x a week (mostly the nachos) and sampling the fine beer. My favorite has always been the Old Brown Dog, but now with my new hobby I try to get something different each time. So I got the nachos (no, there wasn’t any turkey on them) and accompanied it with the Smoked Dunkleweizen. I then sat an enjoyed the atmosphere, sipping an Imperial IPA on cask. It had the perfect balance alcohol and hops, and it was the right choice for reminiscing about the “good ol’ days.”

The next day I met up with my buddy Wayne and headed over to Epping to check out the Holy Grail, a new bar that had opened up in an old church. We started up with a plate of Irish Nachos, potato slices covered with onions, chives and seasoned corned beef (awesome) with a Tuckerman Headwall Alt. The Altbier style is a nice contradiction to today’s hoppy beers, extra malt gives the beer an entirely different mouthfeel. Next I had a corned beef sandwich with a couple of Guinness mixtures with other beers (sort of a specialized black and tan). First I had the Black Knight, a mixture of Guinness with Holy Grail Ale which seemed appropriate for the occasion. Next was the Black Death, a mixture of Guinness and Rogue Dead Guy Ale which turned out to be far more spicier. It was good to see Wayne, one of my mentors, and talk about family and work.

We wrapped up at Redhook, where I was able to try their Belgian Triple on draft. This was a limited release beer for the winter and I was fortunate to be able to try the draft. I like NH and visiting with family, but it is also good to get away and spend sometime for myself. - 5283
