Celebrating a Life - Captain Jon Scott

This past weekend we celebrated the life of Jon Scott, a friend of my family. Captain Scott went to Nuclear Power and Submariner school with my father, and our families have always been close. Mrs. Scott has always been like an aunt to me, and when I heard the Captain Scott passed away I felt that I should go to the service. The memorial service was a fitting tribute, with eulogies being provided by Tulsa (their oldest son) and my dad. Tulsa served on submarines also, and I made a career designing electronics and supporting the Navy. Our families are very similar, and it made me reflect that someday I would be saying some of the same things about my dad. Honor, integrity, commitment to country and to family, these characteristics describe our fathers. I’m proud when people tell me that those characteristics have rubbed off on me. I think my favorite part of the service, the part that was the most meaningful to me, was the attendees singing the Navy Hymn (i.e., Eternal Father, Strong to Save) with the Submariner’s verse. It goes:

“Bless those who serve beneath the deep, through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be! Protect each one, we ask of Thee.
Bless those at home who wait and pray, for their return by night and day.”

The service was memorable, and we’ll be keeping Peggy, Tulsa, Michael, Janice, TJ and Sierra in our prayers.

I got back to spend some more time with my mother-in-law, who’s fighting cancer. She’s a sweet, but tough lady, and could use some prayers also. And although beer was obviously not a priority this weekend, I was able to run some errands and stop in and try the Portsmouth Brewery Grand Cru on cask, brewed with green peppercorns. It was delicious. The bartender was a friendly fellow who was impressed with my beer book, and gave me the beer on the house. I then stopped at Red Hook, and was glad to see their Brewhouse off and experimenting with different flavors. I tried their Molinillo Brown Ale on cask, brewed with Mexican chocolate and had a spicy/chili finish. It is really impressive when you can get something out of the ordinary at such a big brewer.

Quick trip for a quick weekend, filled with prayer and reflection. It tough watching family and friends getting older, then I look in the mirror and realize it’s happening to me too. – 5760/10500
