We
are in the midst of our Indian summer, so we decided to spend a day together as
a family and went to check out Fright-fest at Six Flags New England. And although I’m no longer a big roller
coaster fan (my inner ear is shot), it sure was good to spend a day together
(and not do yard work). Jessica is
becoming a daredevil, and Jacob is content just to walk around, so we had a
good day. But I promised Jenn dinner, so
we headed up to Amherst to one of my favorite brewpubs, Amherst Brewing.
Amherst
was this cool little pub on Main Street, with a great menu and lots of specialty
beers always on tap. I say “was” since
they moved outside of town to a strip mall – bigger, more parking, and more
TVs, pool tables, and foosball. What the
place loss was its character. The had a
lot of waitresses, including those who couldn’t describe their own beers (not
impressive, but perhaps they were new). I
enjoyed the nachos with their Haverhill Pilsner on cask, and Jenn got a
sandwich that was pretty tasty. They had
several local beers on draft, so I enjoyed a Wormtown Woosta Weizenbock while I
played foosball. Don’t get me wrong, if
you are in town it worth a stop, but I wouldn’t make a trip for the place.
Jenn
let me stop in at the Moan and Dove on the way out of town. Now this place has character. I ordered a Boulevard Tank 7 Saison on draft,
and guarded the door while Jacob used the rest room. You want character? They have peanuts to
snack on. They don’t serve food but you are
welcome to bring your own (Subway is next door). And the place is pet friendly, with 3 dogs
all chillin’ out with their owners (wonder if they get their own special
drinks). I think the Dirty Truth in
Northampton had a better beer selection (and food), but this place is just
cool.
We
had a great day. We get pulled in so
many different directions during the week, it was nice spending a day
together. And you know that I’m happy when
Jenn lets me choose where to eat (or drink).
