Laid Back Laundry Day

Friday night in Derby. It was a zoo last May when Matt and I were visiting.  This time we decided to take it a bit easier since we had to be up at the crack of dawn and head to the airport.  So we headed out Friar’s Gate looking for a Laundromat (10 pounds and they would do a week’s worth of laundry, with pickup the following day) and went to Mr. Grundy’s (http://www.mrgrundystavern.info/) for dinner.  I had their Red Baron, a malty red ale, with a BLT.  I just realized I haven’t yet raved about English bacon.  It puts our bacon to shame, makes me turn up my nose to Canadian bacon, and makes my mouth water just thinking about it.  It is meatier than ours, with a bit more fat on the edges that crisps up so nicely.  Well anyways, I went back for a Golden Dawn Golden Ale, and then we decided to go down the road to the Greyhound.

The Greyhound is now the new sister bar to the Brewery Tap, home of Derby Brewing (http://www.derbybrewing.co.uk/).  It is more yuppie, less pubbie, but we were meeting some friends from work for a couple of drinks.  I had the Derby Emerald Stout, an Irish stout that was really strong with roasted malt, especially for an English beer.  It was delicious.  I had the munchies, so I got a plate of nachos and enjoyed the cheese and jalapenos, but didn’t particularly care for homefried chips.  What I like about these pubs is that the Derby beers are excellent, but they also have some top notched guest ales.  I got the Titanic 1912 (wasn’t a very good year) and enjoyed the conversation and fellowship into the evening.

But all good evenings must come to the end, and I had to pick up Jenn in the morning.  So we called it an evening, and hoped to get a good night rest.  Reflecting, it was hard to believe that the first full week was over.  I had tried 92 new beers since Sunday, and I was ready to slow down on the sampling and kick up the touring.  – 6000/12140

The bacon in the UK is amazing and you are right, it puts American bacon to shame. It was one of the surprising food discoveries in the UK. Whether a "rasher" or "streaky" (I preferred rasher), it was delicious.
