Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is an area of North Carolina that has a wonderful variety of beaches to please all beach lovers. It has sand dunes at National Seashore park, a strip off of Highway 12 on the way to Cape Hatteras, enough mini-golf places, restaurants, and shopping for everyone in the family, and has been a favorite of mine ever since we lived in Virginia Beach, especially with the Brew Thru (drive up beer stores) and no prohibitions about drinking on the beach. And it has been where we have gone on vacation over the past several years at a house on the beach rented by my parents. This is a special time for our family since my kids get to hang out with their cousins and Jenn and I get to truly relax together.

We have typically driven down to my folks the night before, and then get on the road early the next morning. If you ask Jacob when we are leaving, he will answer at “0’dark thirty,” a phrase that I’m proud to say that he got from me. I do that to beat the traffic, and to get to the island as early as possible (my vacation doesn’t start until we cross the bridge). And vacation begins at the Outer Banks Brewing Station (http://www.obbrewing.com/). Outer Banks opens at 11:30 for lunch, and has a decent selection of pub grub along with a good set of beers. I had their Meyerbock, a Maibock named after their head brewer, and their Altimeter, a nice Altbier.

A week on the beach is great, starting with the sunrise club where we celebrate by having a beer. The beer of choice is Miller Lite. But you know me, I can only have so much lawnmower beer (you know, beer that tastes best after mowing a lawn on a hot day). Last year I found a great beer store at Milepost 6 called Chip's Beer Market (http://www.chipswinemarket.com/). The best pick’s this year was Tasgall Scottish Ale from Highland Brewing, and a Belgian Ale called Musette from Allagash brewing. In between I got enough specialty ales to sip in the evenings.

Finally, we were able to go over to the Weeping Radish (http://www.weepingradish.com/) to see if they had anything new. They added their seasonal beers to their bottled products. This year they also had a Maibock and an Altbier. The other neat find was a special label for their Black Radish. It celebrated the Christening of the USS NORTH CAROLINA, SSN 777. That was cool since I currently working on the instrumentation and control equipment.

It’s a long drive back, but the week away with my family was the rest I needed to refocus on what is important. - 4211
