I
turned 45 this year, and it struck me that my life is half over. I don’t think that there is any way that I’ll
make it to 90, and therefore this is the first time in my life that I have ever
come to that resolution. But I’m not sad
since like a biker on a trip, I know that it is all downhill from here. No more peddling my butt off, I can just
coast a bit. Awesome!
So
I first decided to check my local beer store, Oliver’s Beverage, to see if
there was anything new or different. To
my surprise they had 3 bottles of Goose Island Bourbon County Bramble Rye on
the shelf. I picked up 2 and went to the
owner to ask to they get these rare beers often (they laughed at me last
February at Goose Island when I asked if they had any). The owner said these were the only 3 bottles
designated for upstate New York, and they are sent out to so that they can say
they distribute these brews to these locations.
First come first serve was the owner’s rule of thumb, and asked why I
didn’t buy the third. So I did: one is cellaring,
one I gave to Brian to trade and the last one was DELICIOUS!!!
For
my birthday, we went up to Saratoga for one of my favorite restaurants, the Local
Pub (http://www.thelocalpubandteahouse.com/). I love this place, it makes me feel like I’m
back in the UK, and they have both a good beer and food selection. We split an order of Welsh Rarebit, and I got
a BLT for dinner (it really was like the UK).
Jessica got nachos and was kind enough to share her jalapenos for my BLT
(like, yet unlike). I first got the
Mendocino Imperial IPA on cask (yes, they now routinely have cask beer at the
Local), and for dessert (my first dessert) I got the Saranac High Peaks Chocolate
Orange stout.
We
were travelling to NH the next day, so we decided my “birthday cake” would be a
Banana Royale Sundae from Ben and Jerry’s.
I got to pick out the ice cream and the kids helped me eat it. – 6008/12205
