Winter Break!

Winter break; a time for the teachers to go skiing and the parents to figure out what to do with their housebound children. It has once again been hectic at work, and it was time to get away and spend some time with family. And with a snow storm coming in, we got out of town Thursday night and went out to see my sister-in-law Terry in Manchester, NH. Friday was miserable with snow, but we were only a few miles away from the SEE Science Museum and we took the kids down to check it out as soon as it opened. The coolest part of the visit was the Lego Millyard project, which contained over 3M Legos and was replica of downtown Manchester at the turn of the 20th century.

After the visit, we caught lunch at Milly’s Tavern, a brewpub down in one of the old Asokeag Millwork buildings. The service was great (we were the only ones in there on a snowy day), and we had the run of the building. I had the American Chop Suey to eat (looked like a casserole to me, guess the name was a local thing) and I got to try their Burton Ale and their TNT Barleywine on draft. Since we weren’t going anywhere for the rest of the day, and since Milly’s didn’t allow bottled beer to go, I also tried their Napoleon Exile. This was their so-so version of a Belgian Ale.

The next day, we headed down to see my niece in Boston to congratulate her on the day before her 21st birthday. We started by going to the Boston Science Museum, and saw a really cool lightning exhibit. We also got to check out a planetarium show that compared our solar system to the worlds of Star Wars. We met Steph at her dorm, met her friends, and then went to a Chinese place for some spicy noodles. It was fun to be able to be with her that afternoon (she was going to a cool party with her friends that night), and then we headed home. We stopped by the former location of the Linwood Grill (#25 on the Beer Advocate list, presently closed or under new management) and Jenn actually felt sorry for me. So, on the way home she and the kids got ice cream in Sturbridge while I checked out beers at Yankee Spirits. The most memorable find was two beers from Pizza Port brewery in San Diego, CA (Judgment Day Ale and Old Viscosity Ale).

It was nice (and needed) to get away from Albany. - -4544
