A Day Perserved in Crystal

Fifteen years of marriage is a milestone that Jenn and I celebrated today. Fifteen is the crystal anniversary, and me being a traditional guy, I had bought Jenn a pair of crystal ear rings for the occasion. My folks watched the kids (God Bless them again) and we headed out to Atlantic City for the evening to celebrate. And after stopping at a winery on the way, we headed over to the Tun Tavern brewpub.

Tun Tavern is named after a famous bar from colonial times, a favorite stop of Benjamin Franklin and the birthplace of the US Marines. It is located right next to the Convention Center, and has been a family favorite since when Grammy’s beach house was located in Ocean City and not at the Outer Banks. I got a burger and tried their Boardwalk Brown Ale (seemed somewhat appropriate at the Jersey shore). It was a good lunch, and Jenn has gotten wise in our time together by getting the beer joint out of the way first. So we went to climb Absecon light, and then checked in to the Trump Taj Mahal. What a view! It was really nice to get back to the beach, even if we were 20+ floors above it.

For dinner we went Dock’s Oyster House, a local favorite since the 1900’s. The food was great, even if the beer selection wasn’t. The staff was really nice, even if they were a little out of my league. I can imagine important mafia people hanging out there, getting their special orders, and talking to the staff as old friends. Jenn loved the clam chowder, and I loved the brownie points I got for not thinking with my beer book for a few hours. We then headed over to the Tropicana, and found a Swarovski store where Jenn found a pair of earrings that blew doors over the ones I got a Macy’s. I even found a matching pendant that was perfect for Mother’s Day. Finally, I found Firewaters, a multi-tap beer bar off the boardwalk. The manager was very talkative, telling me how they had recently hosted the Atlantic City brew festival. I had the Terrapin Hopsecutioner IPA, nice, but with an overpowering bitterness.

It was a good day. Jenn and I had gambled, and we were down ~$60. I had a finally found a machine that I liked, with a game that I liked, and chose to put in another $20. After 2 pulls, I hit for $75 and walked away, ending up being down only $1. Not bad entertainment for those who are willing to risk it. – 5450
