What’s in a number? I turned 43 this weekend. I have cool birthday (4-5-6-7) and I typically enjoy it by going out and doing something fun. And I’ve also started this bad habit of calling it my birthday weekend, or birthday week, or something else that is convenient so that I can go out more than once. And so it was this past weekend down in Jersey. We made it down Friday to be there for Easter weekend, and to take advantage of my Mom’s offer to watch the kids while Jenn and I went with my brother and his wife to get some brunch in Philly.

We went to the Standard Tap, and were pleasantly surprised to find out that they had a deck that we could dine on. It was a beautiful day (spring had sprung), and I was able to order a delicious omelet with a side of scrapple (Philly’s very own version of spam). And to wash it down I enjoyed a Philadelphia Fleur de Lehigh, a nice version of saison. Afterwards we stopped by The Foodery for some beer to go. I got a Haand Barrel-aged Porter, aged in aquavit barrels, and a Brew Dog Tokyo, an imperial stout brewed with jasmine and cranberries and weighing in at 18.2%ABV. We then stopped by at Standard Tap’s sister bar, Johnny Brendas, which was more 50’s diner where I enjoyed a Dock Street Man Full of Trouble Porter on cask. We had a great time.

On my birthday, my dad and I headed over to Capone’s restaurant in Norristown. What a great bar! First of all, it had a great bottle selection (more beer to go). I got a bottle of Russian River Consecration and Haand’s Wild Thing. Next was the food, I got the cheesesteak with a side of peppers. The peppers were on the side because they were frickin’ hot (just the way I like them). And finally, their draft selection was out of this world. They offered samplers, so my included The Brewery’s Mischief, Haand’s Dark Force, and Dark Horse’s Plead the 5th Russian Imperial Stout. It was great getting out with my dad (we did do cake later on with the rest of the family). All I can say is Happy Birthday to me!- 5450
