Friendly Fenway

What do you get the woman who has everything? How about Red Sox tickets?!? Yes, that’s right, Jenn enjoys going to Fenway Park more than about anything else, including a stop at the Boston Beer Works for dinner. A brewpub and a ballgame, and that is HER present. I am a lucky man. And since my in-laws had agreed to watch the kids, we had all afternoon to enjoy Boston before heading over to the ballpark.

We started off at Faneuil Hall for a light lunch. Government Center offered $10 parking for the day (can’t beat that), so we went to the Union Oyster House for some chowda’. Jenn got the New England Clam Chowda’ (what else), while I got the fish chowda’ with a Colonial Ale from Sam Adams. And although they didn’t have bread bowls, the soup (and the beer) was delicious. We checked out the shops, and then I hung out at Durgin Park. There was air conditioning and a Harpoon John Durgin Ale, not a bad combination. Next we took the T over to Fenway (make sure you get on the right Red Line train), and went to our favorite watering hole, the Boston Beer Works.

Jenn loves this brewpub’s Blueberry Ale, a little too much on the sweet side but decorated nicely with floating blueberries in the drink. I got a sampler, which was highlighted with an Imperial Golden Ale on cask that was to die for. It was also British Beer month, so I was able to sample a few others (Terrier Scottish Ale, UK Wheat, Curly’s Irish Stout) while enjoying a fine Welsh Rarebit. Then it was off to the game, where we witnessed a successful outing by the Sox over the Kansas City Royals. Buchholz pitched a gem and out dueled Greinke in a 1-0 victory. That same night, Halladay pitched a no hitter against the Marlins for my Phillies, but my Flyers lost their opening game in the Stanley Cup 6-5 to the Blackhawks. I guess all of my sporting events can be defensive struggles. We made our may back to NH (a longer trip than I thought on a long day) save and sound.

The next day, we properly thanked my in-laws for watching the kids with lunch at the Portsmouth Brewery. Jenn got the nachos (and thankfully shared with me) while I tried the Reuben with a pint of their Hop Bob on cask. All-in-all a great weekend. I sure do love celebrating Jenn’s Birthday!!! – 5510
