Round Trip to CT

Road trip. From time to time I have to travel down to Groton, CT for business. I had hope to spend the night before with my brother Dave and his wife, but Jenn had an event at school and I needed to watch the kids. So instead of a night of beer drinking and orc killing (sorry Horde members), I went to bed early for the early morning trip. So I was off by 5AM, and got to Groton in time (actually 1-1/2 hours before everyone else) for the meeting. I preferred to travel alone since it freed up my trip home.

My first stop on the return voyage was the Willimantic Brew pub, a great bar in central CT. It is not far off the beaten path, offers some great beer after a long day of meetings in Groton, and provides free Wi-Fi (which is very convenient when I have some time to kill and can do a few WOW dailies). I tried the Partee Phunk, a wild ale, and it didn’t disappoint. Sometimes these beers grow wild, and other times there is simply a fine tang to them. This was a great example of the style. I next headed over to City Steam in downtown Hartford. I like this place, especially when I-91 is backed up heading north. I stopped for a cup of beef and barley, along with a grilled cheese sandwich (not just for kids) and a pint of their Pugnacious Porter. It was deep, dark and satisfying. It is so much nicer to enjoy the journey, especially now that I’m not just looking to beat my best travel time.

I had no problems for the rest of the trip (the northern traffic had died down just nicely), and was able to find a bottle of the Nogne O Dark Horizon at the Table & Vine. I was kind of embarrassed that I had asked my folks to bring back a bottle from Norway, when I had a bottle here in the states. Oh well, guess I’ll keep Beer Hunting. – 5508
