I had lived in Troy when I first started work, and there was a brunch place in town on the river that I always used to take anyone who would visit me. It was called Castaways, and I was disappointed to find out that it was replaced by Fresnos when we moved back into the area. Fresnos was a Tex-Mex joint, but the food was bland, the service was slow, and the beer selection was limited to Bud and Bud Light. So you can imagine my excitement when it was replaced with a Dinosaur Bar-B-Que last month, offering the best smoked meat in NY. Jenn and I had both loved the locations in Syracuse and Rochester, and we were excited to check out our region’s new addition.
At 4PM on Saturday, the place was already packed. No problem, we moseyed the kids toward the bar and I got Jenn a jar of Sangria while I enjoyed a Goose Island Mild Winter on draft while watching the Army/Navy game (Navy won for the 10th time in a row 34-17). The beer selection was excellent, especially for a restaurant. The mild winter has a hint of spice but is not over-powering. We got a table in ½ the time advertised, and had a great view of the river (can’t wait for the spring visits). Jenn and I split a swag sampler, with deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, shrimp, and chicken wings with their Dueling Devil sauce (watch out, the heat really builds up). Jenn got a pulled pork sandwich with a side of BBQ Dirty rice (note to self, ALWAYS choose this side) while I sampled their brisket with blue cheese with a Southern Tier Old Man Winter. Excellent food, great drinks, nice view; when do we get to go back?
I guess the only down side for us was that there wasn’t a children’s menu. Jessica was excited to get a ¼ rack of ribs so she was fine. Jacob had plain chicken with fries, but concentrated on the fries. All in all, we have a new family favorite right here in town. Guess we’ll be bringing the new visitors back to the old location. – 5683/10177
