Another
trip to Pittsburgh, and this time it was leave one morning and come back the
next night. The nice part was that I had
free reign, travelling alone, so I could plan to hit all of my favorites (or so
I thought).
I
met up with some friends and they wanted to make an early evening of it, so we
headed over to Primanti Bros for dinner.
Lame beer selection (I had iced tea), but I did get one of their special
sandwiches. I got fresh German baloney
on homemade bread, with cheese, cole slaw and French fries, all on the sandwich
(it’s a Pittsburgh thing). It was a nice
visit, but I was still thirsty. So I
headed up to Fat Head’s on South Side to try some beers and watch the World
Series. They had only one beer on cask,
Bear Republic Red Rocket, and I hadn’t had it before (so I ordered it, yeah). I
followed it up with a Dark Horse Homosapien Cherry Ale (delicious), and a Fat
Head Pumpkin Chucker Imperial Pumpkin Ale.
Great spot, great choice for hanging out for a bit.
The
next day I worked thru lunchtime, and then headed over to Gooski’s on Polish
Hill. Although a website stated they
were open for lunch, but they weren’t.
I’ll come back for the beer (and the pierogies). No worries, the Church Brew Works was right
around the corner. I got their
cheesesteak, made with their own specialty beer cheese (real tasty), to go with
a mint licorice IPA on cask. I know what
you’re thinking, but it was actually pretty good, sort of like a cough drop in
a glass. I tried to find the new Sharp
Edge Beer Emporium downtown (couldn’t), but chose to head over to the
Creekhouse instead. Still more time to
kill, but there wasn’t much new on tap.
I had the cask before, and a pair of sots were blocking their beer
cooler, so I chose a Dark Horse Boffo Brown Ale on draft. A nice, well balanced, malty ale.
I
still had more time to kill, and even though there are many places in
Pittsburgh to get a quality draft, there is none more convenient than Bocktown
for air travelers. I started with a specialty,
Blue Point Oatmeal Stout infused with blueberries and bananas that was great
for chillin’ with. This bar allows you
to buy 4oz samples, so I rewarded myself with a Nebraska Summertime Rye Saison
and an East End Fat Gary. It also has a
great bottle selection, so for my checked luggage I included a Nebraska Hop God
and a New Holland Envious.
I packed my suitcase, caught my plane, and made it
home safe and sound (and no broken bottles).
Travelling is a pain these days, so you might as well make work for you.
