AS, MA, and VT

I went to Syracuse today to attend a seminar on Asperger’s Disorder (http://www.aspergers.com/). My son was diagnosed 2 years ago, and I wanted to hear about any of the latest advances in interventions. Asperger’s is a form of high functioning autism, and is typically characterized by socialization impairments and fixation on sameness or specific interests. The patient often has difficulty with non-verbal communication, and talks non-stop on things that they want to discuss (i.e., elevators, pokemon). The statistics show it is predominantly seen in boys, and has a genetic component linked to the father. For me, it was an opportunity to learn more about something that has become such a large part in our life. The largest question that was answered for me dealt with whether it was wise to transition to a full time aide in the classroom for next year, or should we look at alternatives as we discuss our son’s Individual Development Plan with the school’s next week.

We were on our own at lunch time, so I made it over to Clark’s Ale House (122 W Jefferson St). Their motto is 22 drafts and 1 sandwich. Their one sandwich is roast beef (although they’ve added a Turkey sandwich to the menu so I don’t know what that does for their motto) and it was delicious. I got a cup of beef and barley soup to go with it, along with Middles Ages Clark’s Armory Ale on cask. Their unique draft selections seemed to be from Michigan, so I assumed the owner had made a recent road trip.

After the seminar, I made it over to the Middle Ages brewery (http://www.middleagesbrewing.com/) to try out their tasting room. I was able to sample both their Grail Ale and Apricot Ale while I was there. You can buy glasses, shirts, bottles of beer, and growlers. Since I had a lot of beer from my birthday party, I passed on the growler and got a souvenir pint glass before heading over to the original Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (http://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/). Jenn and I loved the one over in Rochester that we go to at Synod Assembly, but the one in Syracuse is the original. It is a biker bar, but it has awesome food and a good selection of beers. I stuck with the theme for the day and tried the Middle Ages Syracuse Pale Ale to go with my fried green tomatoes. It was a good day

On a personal note, I can’t believe how incredibly saddened I am over the tragic events at Virginia Tech this week. All who know me know how proud and supportive I am about my alma mater. I’m not sure that I would have felt the same way if it happened somewhere else. But as I watched the details come in, saw the pictures of MY school, witnessed MY fellow Hokies grieving, I become overcome with emotion and tears. As much as I feel sadness for the men and women who lost their lives, I’m also saddened that this may be the legacy that is associated with VT for years to come. I was proud of the school spirit shown by the students in the aftermath, and I am overwhelmed by the show of support seen across the country. Last night it was the Nationals donning VT caps during their game. Today I walked into the Syracuse Student center and saw ten wall sized sheets full of signatures of love and support. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, but I have faith that God will help us through it. - 4132

Hey Jeff - I've been thinking about you a lot and meant to send an e-mail. I'm wearing my orange and maroon today!
